Course Management

Like most course/learning management systems (C/LMS), Segue can be configured to show students and faculty a list of courses they are participating in and allow instructors to create sites for courses they are teaching.  Most C/LMS allow course sites to either be public or restrict access to those enrolled in or participating in the course.  Since Segue has more granular access control than most C/LMS (including Moodle, Sakai, and Blackboard), course instructors and/or administrators can define role-based access control for any node in a course site (i.e. section, page or content block in the site).  Thus some sections/pages/blocks may be public, others restricted to students, still others may be restricted to particular individuals who may be given the role of author or editor on the site.

Most mature C/LMS have a wide range of modules, plugins or tools that can be added to extend the system’s functionality. Segue has a plugin API but only a few plugins have been developed at this point.  For example, Segue currently has no grading functionality.  It isn’t inconceivable that Segue could support plugins/modules created for other systems such as Moodle.  Where many applications use only plugins/modules, Segue has a unique templating system (modeled on MediaWiki templates) that allows widgets from trusted sources to be embedded in content blocks.  Currently Segue has templates for embedding video from a variety of video sharing sites and templates for embedding Google maps and calendars.
