Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"width: 178px; height: 342px; margin: 5px; border: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/segueproject.org\/curricular-technologies\/files\/2009\/05\/iphone01-white.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"742\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/>I\u00a0did a presentation at the Apple <a href=\"http:\/\/maclearning.org\/2009\/03\/mit2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AcademiX 2009 conference<\/a> at MIT on <a href=\"https:\/\/segue.middlebury.edu\/view\/html\/site\/achapin-ipod\/node\/2598139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iPods and 2nd Language Acquisition<\/a>in the Stata Center.\u00a0 Some of the projects I presented included Beginning Mandarin Chinese, Japanese Vocabulary, French verbs, phonetics and short stories.Vijay Kumar gave one of the keynote presentations focusing on openess in education and discussing projects such as MIT&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ocw.mit.edu\/OcwWeb\/web\/home\/home\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenCourseware<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/icampus.mit.edu\/iLabs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iLabs<\/a> (online laboratories) and <a href=\"http:\/\/web.sls.csail.mit.edu\/lectures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lecture Browser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Hammond and Richard Miller from Rutgers University gave an amazing presentation entitled &#8220;The Center Cannot Hold: Living, Learning, and Leading in a Networked World.&#8221;\u00a0 They spoke of an &#8220;unprecedented crisis in education&#8221; and the need for a paradigm shift that involves new forms of composition consisting of less of text and more of composition with ideas (new media composition).\u00a0 Indeed their presentation was an example of such as composition, seamlessly weaving text, images and video with one of them (not sure which) controlling the transitions as they spoke, boucing ideas off each other and the group as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Severance, the chief architect of <a href=\"http:\/\/sakaiproject.org\/portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sakai<\/a> gave the final keynote address on &#8220;Evolving Teaching and Learning: Beyond the LMS.&#8221;\u00a0 Dr Chuck likened current LMS&#8217;s to dinosaurs but did not predict their immediate demise.\u00a0 Rather, he suggested that the LMS\u00a0can be redesigned to allow new tools to be more easily incorporated.\u00a0 He also gave a demonstration of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cloudcollab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CloudCollab<\/a> that allows\u00a0 a &#8220;social cloud&#8221;
