{"id":180024,"date":"2008-04-26T15:03:53","date_gmt":"2008-04-26T15:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seguecommunity.middlebury.edu\/view\/html\/node\/180024"},"modified":"2012-08-06T20:01:01","modified_gmt":"2012-08-06T20:01:01","slug":"standards","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/mashups\/mashups-for-the-masses\/standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>OpenID<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"126\" vspace=\"5\" hspace=\"5\" height=\"42\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/segueproject.org\/mashups\/files\/2008\/04\/openid_logo.png\" \/><font size=\"4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/openid.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">OpenID<\/a><\/font> is a decentralized identity service base on open standards that allows users to log on to many different sites using a single digital identity.&nbsp; This would greatly simplify the creation of mashups that require authentication.&nbsp; At the same time, OpenID challenges how educational institutions handle identity:<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-left: 1px dotted;margin: 10px;padding-left: 10px\"><font color=\"#808080\">Our students will begin turning up at schools, colleges and universities with perfectly good online identities (in much the same way that they now turn up with perfectly good email addresses) and that our educational institutions will have to begin functioning as Relying Parties (i.e. as the recipients of externally authenticated users). In short, students are part of the wider online community and their educational identity (persona) is only one facet of their lives. <\/font><\/div>\n<div align=\"right\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ariadne.ac.uk\/issue51\/powell-recordon\/\">OpenID: Decentralised Single Sign-on for the Web<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<div align=\"left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ariadne.ac.uk\/issue51\/powell-recordon\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>OpenSocial<\/h3>\n<div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"102\" vspace=\"5\" hspace=\"5\" height=\"82\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/segueproject.org\/mashups\/files\/2008\/04\/opensocial_logo.png\" alt=\"\" \/><font size=\"4\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/apis\/opensocial\/\">OpenSocial<\/a><\/font> <font size=\"2\" color=\"#808080\">is a initiative lead by Google to create a set of APIs for accessing social network data and core functions from social network sites and using these in web applications.&nbsp; It is often described as a more open cross-platform alternative to Facebook.&nbsp; Ideally, users could export the social graph from one site and bring it to another.&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Open Service Interface Definitions<\/h3>\n<div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"130\" vspace=\"5\" hspace=\"5\" height=\"123\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/segueproject.org\/mashups\/files\/2008\/04\/osid_diagram06.png\" alt=\"\" \/><font size=\"4\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.okiproject.org\/\">Open Service Interfaces Definitions<\/a><\/font> <font size=\"2\" color=\"#808080\">(OSIDs) are standards for systems interoperability that are central to the mission of the Open Knowledge Initiative of making it easier for educational institutions to develop and share resources.&nbsp; For example the Repository OSID specifies how one system, an OSID consumer, can access and use assets from another remote system, an OSID provider.&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Universal Widget<\/h3>\n<div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" vspace=\"5\" hspace=\"5\" height=\"147\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/segueproject.org\/mashups\/files\/2008\/04\/universal_widget_sketch.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><font size=\"4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dev.netvibes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Universal Widget<\/a><\/font> <font size=\"2\"><font color=\"#808080\">is an initiative started by Netvibes to develop an open widget framework that would allow for the creation of widgets that could be used in a variety of widget platforms including iGoogle, Yahoo, Mac OS and Windows Vista.&nbsp;
