{"id":475890,"date":"2008-06-25T19:35:53","date_gmt":"2008-06-25T23:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/segue.middlebury.edu\/view\/html\/node\/475890"},"modified":"2008-06-25T19:35:53","modified_gmt":"2008-06-25T23:35:53","slug":"august-2003","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/news\/journal\/august-2003\/","title":{"rendered":"August 2003"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Collaboration with OKI Developers at MIT<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p><b>Cambridge, Aug 11-15, 2003 &#8211; <\/b>Alex Chapin, Gabe Schine and Adam Franco met with developers of the Open Knowledge Iniative (<a title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/oki\/\">OKI<\/a>) at MIT for a week long residency.&nbsp; During that time, OKI developers introduced us to their just released <a title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/okiproject\">open architectural specifications <\/a>they designed to support the development of educational software.&nbsp; In turn, we demonstrated <a title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/segue.middlebury.edu\/resolver\/segue1\/site\/segue\">Segue<\/a>, our collaborative learning system and mapped out <a title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/harmoni\">Harmoni<\/a>, our suite of application services and web application framework\/architecture.<\/p>\n<p>This collaboration clarified for us OKI goals and objectives and provided us the details necessary to begin implementing the OKI <a title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/oki\/specs\/index.html\">Service Interface Definitions<\/a>&nbsp;for Segue version 2.0 planned for release Spring 2004.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>The latest version of OSIDs (Open Service Interface Definitions) were very similiar to how the <a title=\"Developer Documentation (in progress)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/devo.middlebury.edu\/harmoni_gabe\/harmoni\/docs\/manual\/\">Harmoni <\/a>application\/services framework\/architecture is built, the OSIDs perhaps being slightly more extensible.&nbsp; We were very impressed with the digital repository OSID.&nbsp; Adam has begun to implement these interfaces in PHP for <a title=\"Digital Assets Management\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/concerto\/\">Concerto<\/a> (MediaDB).&nbsp; We will probably use the Assessment OSIDs for Measure (<a title=\"Assessement\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/segue.middlebury.edu\/resolver\/segue1\/site\/ET\/section\/66\/page\/231\">MOTS<\/a>), our assessment module. The OSIDs for hierarchy, logging and course management will also be useful to us.<\/p>\n<p>We introduced the OKI developers to our PHP classes for <a title=\"Database Abstraction\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/devo.middlebury.edu\/harmoni_gabe\/doc\/harmoni.dbc\/package-summary.html\">Database Connection<\/a> which they thought may&nbsp;complement their work on abstracting database connectivity, a thorny problem for which we have developed an extensible solution.<\/p>\n<p>We will continue to refine Harmoni over the fall.&nbsp; In addition we will be fleshing out Polyphony, our intermodular framework for services common to all Harmoni-enabled web applications.&nbsp; Polyphony is essentially another abstraction layer that Segue, Concerto, Measure and StudyDB will use to share methods for yet another level of interoperability.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Associated Colleges of the South Integrate Segue<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>ACS Technology Center&nbsp;is one of three regional Centers working with the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (<a title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nitle.org\/\">NITLE<\/a>).&nbsp; They will be releasing version 2.0 of their <a title=\"Course Management\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cds.colleges.org\/dev\/login.php\">Course Delivery System<\/a> (CDS) in which they have integrated Segue.&nbsp; The ACS developers did find the integration to be challenging and have provided us with important feedback that will help us improve Segue&#8217;s interoperability. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Collaboration with OKI Developers at MIT Cambridge, Aug 11-15, 2003 &#8211; Alex Chapin, Gabe Schine and Adam Franco met with developers of the Open Knowledge Iniative (OKI) at MIT for a week long residency.&nbsp; During that time, OKI developers introduced&hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/news\/journal\/august-2003\/\" class=\"continue-reading\">More &rarr;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29,"featured_media":0,"parent":481079,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-475890","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/475890","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/29"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=475890"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/475890\/revisions"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/481079"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/segueproject.org\/segue-documentation\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=475890"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
