iPods in Middlebury Language Schools

Selected students and faculty in the Middlebury College Chinese and Russian Schools received iPods preloaded with their summer study material as part of an iPods and 2nd language acquisition pilot project. Alex Chapin will be presenting the results of this pilot at the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) 2005 annual conference this November

NERCOMP 2005 Annual Conference

Shel Sax, Alex Chapin, Dave Guertin and Adam Franco as well as others from Middlebury attended the 2005 Nercomp annual conference in Worcester, MA.

Shel and Dave Donahue lead a session entitled IT-Library Merger: Part II (an Update). Alex and Adam did a session entitled Building Institutional Repositories from the Bottom Up.

Japanese Vocabulary

Kyoko Davis has added nearly 600 new vocabulary items into the Japanese version of StudyDB. This lexical database now has nearly 3000 lexical items.

Spanish Placement Testing

The Spanish Department used the Measure (aka MOTS) assessment management system to delivery Spanish listening and reading comprehension placement tests to incoming February first year students.

 

iPods for 2nd Language Acquisition

iPods are popular MP3 players made by Apple Computers. While these devices are used primarily for collecting and playing digital music, they can also be very effective tools for second language acquisition.

Voyage to Ithaka: Technology, Collaboration, and the Future of Liberal Arts Colleges

November 17, 2004“Voyage to Ithaka” is the second national conference sponsored by the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE) and was attended by over 270 presidents, deans, provosts, CIOs, librarians, faculty, and other administrators and included sessions that showcased various programs and projects sponsored by NITLE and its three regional centers. Ithaka refers to the newly formed not-for-profit organization that is seeking to provide resources to various smaller organizations (such as NITLE). Information Desk Assessments
