Much of our early development was driven by the needs of the Middlebury College Language Schools.  In particular the need to support mulitple languages including languages that use non-Latin based character sets such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Russian.

We also wanted to create tools that users could customize in terms of appearance and layout.  As well, we wanted general purpose tools that could be used for courses, but also for e-portfolios, research, resource sites and so on.  To this end, we avoided specialized feature sets and focussed on functionality that could be used for a variety of purposes.

More recently, we have been adding our own implementations of emerging technologies such as tagging, podcasting, versioning and wiki-linking.  Our goal here is to build this functionality in a way that helps faculty and students to understand how these new technologies work.
