Precise control over publication scope…
Segue simplifies and streamlines the process of publishing academic material on the web as well as defining the scope and granularity of publication. In other words, it offers precise control over what material gets published, who can access the specified publication and when a given publication is available.
For example, access to research may be limited to faculty peers for review purposes, course material may be limited to students in that particular course, a curriculum vita may be on a site accessible to the public.
Because all of this information is integrated into one content management system, it is easy to make portions of research available to students or to limit portions of a C.V. to particular individuals. In many institutions, separate systems have been implemented to handle the management of courses, research and e-portfolios, making it difficult to move content from one to another.
Extensible hierarchical organization….
The next version of Segue will function as a digital repository for both institutions and individuals. To do so, it will need to allow for a more extensible hierarchical organization not unlike a computer operating system, allowing individuals to develop their own repositories within the institutional repository.
Map hierarchy to navigational system…
Segue will provide various ways of mapping this hierarchical organization to a navigational system to contextualize content. Individuals who leave the institution should be able to continue developing their repositories in their own instance of Segue. In addition we will develop interfaces for porting content to and from Segue and other systems including Sakai, Blackboard, WebCT and many weblog tools such as Moveable Type.
